'Connect Our Kids' at the Caps' Game
Connect Our Kids co-founders Jessica Stern and Jennifer Jacobs joined Washington Capitals play-by-play announcer Joe Beninati between periods of a recent Caps game to share information about their work with the television viewing audience. Connect Our Kids, a privately funded, non-profit organization based in Falls Church, Virginia, is this year's recipient of the Burke & Herbert Bank Scores for Kids donation. During the 2017-2018 season, the organization will receive $100 from Burke & Herbert Bank for every goal scored by the Capitals.
The Caps have scored more than 250 times this season, resulting in more than $25,000 pledged to Connect Our Kids (so far!). The Bank's donation will provide Connect Our Kids with a big assist in its work to make important changes and enhancements in the foster care system.
Founded in 2015 by Dr. Jennifer Jacobs and Jessica Stern, the organization's mission is to develop intelligent software tools that social workers can use to find safe, loving families for foster children. Currently, social workers must search manually when trying to find extended family members of foster kids. Connect Our Kids seeks to accelerate and expand that search by pairing traditional detective work with innovative technology.
Burke & Herbert Bank's "Scores for Kids" donation will go a long way toward helping Connect Our Kids achieve its goal of connecting more children with families who can give them the support and attention they need. Dr. Jacobs says "there's no doubt that everyone at Connect Our Kids will be cheering on the Caps this season and rooting for another record-breaking scoring total."
The previous "Scores for Kids" seasons helped two other local non-profits continue their great work to help children in need. In the first year of the program, the Bank donated $25,200 to MVK Inc. Last season, Alice's Kids received $26,300, based on the number of goals the Capitals scored.
