Payment Scams

Stay Alert: Scammers Targeting Business Payment & Payroll Changes

Scammers are impersonating employees and requesting “routine” payroll or payment changes. The email looks real and often use accurate employee details – but the updated account belongs to a fraudster. Some quick verification steps can help prevent significant final losses.

How This Scam Works

A fraudster emails your payroll or HR team pretending to be an employee and asks to update their direct deposit account.

  • Everything looks normal: Real employee name -Familiar writing style Correct job info No urgent or unusual wording.

  • The change is made – and payroll is sent to a fraudulent account.

  • Why It’s Effective – Fraudsters are using real employee information – Appears routine and non urgent – Mimics trusted communication – Fraud is only noticed after the payroll is processed!

How to Reduce Risk

Simple verification steps make a BIG difference:
Confirming requests using a trusted phone number
A quick call to the employee, using a number you already have on file not the one listed in the email
Use a second review process
Having another team member review or approve payroll/account changes
Keep a quick checklist Look for unusual timing and unexpected requests

These steps take seconds and provide strong protection.

If You Suspect Fraud
• Pause the transaction immediately
• DO NOT reply to suspicious email
