Scams

Be Aware: Scammers Are Getting Smarter
Cybercriminals are now targeting consumers directly through known and trusted channels of communication. Using sophisticated techniques, they impersonate bank representatives via phone calls, texts, and e-mails to trick them into sharing sensitive information. The best defense against savvy scammers is heightened awareness.
How to Spot & Avoid SCAMS
Phone Scams
Scammers will call you, and using technology, they can make it appear the call is coming from your bank. They may impersonate a bank employee and ask for personal or account details. These calls are generated by malicious third parties using “spoofing” techniques to initiate conversations with customers to try to obtain personal or account related information.
WHAT TO DO:
- Either hang up or tell the caller you will call them back.
- Then, contact Burke & Herbert Bank directly at 1-855-571-5824 or reach out to your local branch.
Text & Email Scams
Scammers will text or email you a message. Often, they try to alarm you so you will act quickly without thinking. There may be clues like incorrect spelling or poor grammar.
WHAT TO DO:
- Do not click on any suspicious text or email links.
- Do not respond to requests for personal or financial information such as your Digital Banking password, account numbers or Social Security numbers.
- Remember: Burke & Herbert Bank will never request this type of information by phone, text or email.
